Showcasing 67 stencil artists from 25 countries, including local Inner West artists, the Stencil Art Prize is the world’s largest stencil event. Influenced by the ephemeral nature of street art, these stencil-based works blend pop-culture imagery and global politics to highlight the growing concerns of a socially engaged generation of artists.

Now in its 9th year running, the Stencil Art Prize is exhibiting as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival program of events. The winner of the $5000 cash prize will be judged by prominent Australian street artist Rone and be announced on the 8 September.  Following the Sydney Exhibition, the Stencil Art Prize will tour to Muswellbrook Regional Art Centre in NSW and Noosa Regional Gallery in QLD in 2018.

Highlights of the exhibition include the Austrian duo Jana & JS with their intimate style of portraiture, David Soukup (USA, 2013 Stencil Art Prize Winner) and his internationally acclaimed Chicago fire escapes; Lithuanian artist Justinas Zozo with a sublime impression of a native Kingfisher bird, Iranian artist Afshid with his portrayal of refugees, migration and heritage; Mue Bon’s (Thailand) playful take on capitalism and Australia’s own Kirpy who has layered dozens of street posters as a base upon which to create a streetscape.
